what’s ergonomics got to do with It?

ergonomics is the science concerned with design, and arranging things people use so that the people and things interact most efficiently and safely (Merriam-Webster Online). though this is a practice most commonly applied in the workforce, interior design also embraces these practices. you may be asking, what does this have to do with events? in designing and hosting  events, style and arrangement takes precedence  – after all, there is a story to tell,and a look to achieve. how much could it matter if the chair is a tad too high for the table, or the side table too low for the lounge sofa, or the spacing between each guest’s chair is a bit too close for comfort. and what about the children, they can use an adult chair to sit at the table – it’s only a few hours. this is one way to rationalize, but what IF we can implement BOTHaesthetics, comfort & safety (don’t we make provisions for our vegetarian guests in our menu selections?)? ergonomics have given us standard dimensions for furniture design, spacing and placement based on the average human adult figure. in part one of this post we will focus on sizing and placement of tables and chairs.

Table Seating Specifications






here are just a couple more quick tips :

  • in determining table size consider elbow room – there should be 24″ per person for a comfy fit. you should add 2″ to the figure if using armchairs and subtract 2″ for snug seating.
  • in choosing between a round or rectangular table (including square), keep in mind that round tables blend in easier with other furniture pieces and also allow for easy movement around them.
  • a depth of 15″ to 18″ is recommended for most adults.  using a seat that is too deep will press against the back of the legs of your guests; and, having a seat that is too shallow will make them slouch forward.
  • chairs used for dining should have an average height of 16″ to 17″, and the table height should be 29″-30″ – allowing approximately 13″ for knee clearance.
  • bar stools have an average height of 28″-30″, with an accompanying cocktail table or bar that is 40″ – 45″ high.

what’s that main idea here? no one is suggesting  that we  run around with a tape measure sizing up every piece of event furniture we select, but should the opportunity arise that you have options in the selection  of your event pieces – optimize your event by  pairing furniture selections that come  closest to the dimensions of our bodies as they relate to the furniture and it’s function. here a couple more images of how some of our expert event designers, planners and clients use some of our rental collections to implement these practices.

turquoise chiavari chairs debut at dr seuss birthday celebration – oh yeah!

last december we received a call with a special request (and we looooove those special requests!) – turquoise colored chiavari chairs for a dr seuss birthday celebration.  and so our custom colored chiavari chairs made their debut. here are some of the design and event details.

a life sized  sculptured cat in the hat greeted each guest as they entered the main room which was adorned with the iconic red and white stripes that so many of us have come to relate to this very popular children’s story classic – and the turquoise chiavari chairs.

the striped overlays created the perfect backdrop for the turquoise chairs. as a focal point, at the end of the room was a gorgeous and very well thought out gift table (for the guests, that is…). if you look closely, you will see that each child’s gift was wrapped with red and white striped gift paper! and if you look further, can you see the chevron print in black and white? what a clever way to continue the play with lines and tie in mr cat in the hat!

let’s not forget the cake! check out the artistry on this birthday cake. it looks like a perfectly sculptured piece of porcelain!

the sweets were not the only “eye candy” to obsess about –  take a look at how the fun geometric shapes and lines were embedded in the design.

outside the venue was yet another layer of design, storytelling and excitement for the senses! under the red and white striped tent party guests had another opportunity to continue their sugar rush with  a fun foods station created by the donut divas:   mini donuts + deep fried candy bars + oreos +  elephant ears +  churros = yum!

There’s an endless variety in what we think of as a line and used wisely, they can add interest and personality to your event décor.

Lines can be thick or thin. They can be long or short. The can be vertical, horizontal, or diagonal. They can be solid or dotted or dashed. Lines can be curved or straight of combinations of both. You can use lines to the direct the eyes, suggest personality (straight lines are more professional, while curved are more casual), and create illusions. The direction and weight of a line also have a psychological impact, for instance:

• Horizontal lines indicate response and tranquility
• Vertical lines communicate a feeling of nobleness and spirituality, strength and grandeur
• Combination of a horizontal and vertical lines communicate stability and solidity
• Diagonal lines indicate movement, activity, force and direction and energy
• Soft, shallow curves sow sophistication, comfort and flexibility and femininity
• Deep acute curve-curves indicate confusion, turbulence and instability

the chevron pattern

The chevron pattern continues to be a hot trend in all that is design. It’s a nice spin off on the traditional stripe pattern and adds a dynamic element to any design. Commonly used for interior design and textiles (we’ve seen this design on rugs, pillows, wallpaper, etc.) over the years we have begun to see this pattern in fashion. We think it’s the perfect accent to add to your event! Here’s a little history on its origin.

Chevron pattern (also spelled cheveron) an inverted v pattern. Sometimes the word “zig zag” or herringbone is used to describe this pattern. It dates back to 1800 BC where it was found in early art designs such as pottery and rock carvings. The word “chevron” is usually used to describe a fret in architecture and may also be found in highway signs to guide drivers and around curves.

Incorporate a few pops of this pattern to your next event!

something blue

even though pantone has named honeysuckle the color of the year, editors of home and fashion magazines are strongly predicting that the color blue is trending up.

calming and associated to the natural world – the sky, ocean, twillight, blue is a universal favorite of both, men and women. this color conveys confidence and is associated with stability, unity, intelligence and conservatism. in the west the something blue bridal tradition represents love.

although blue is a year-round color combing pastel blues with pink and pale yellows can create a springtime look. deep blues can be used as a colder weather color and, bright bold blues for a summer look.

we put together an inspiration board using sapphire and turquoise. we used silver as an accent color that can be matched with sapphire to create a sophisticated look or with the turqouise to add a bit of “bling” to your summer event.

other shades of blue: cerulean, azule, sapphire, navy, cobalt, indigo, royal, sky blue, midnight blueprussian blue, cornflower blue, cyan, baby blue.

yellow: an inspiration for spring & summer events












any color palette can work during any season of the year by simply playing with it’s hue. take yellow for example. use a lighter, pastel shade of yellow and dress up your spring events. use a brighter hue of yellow to create your summer soiree’s and go deeper and darker (like mustard!) for fall events!
